Man arrested for rape after sabotaging woman’s engagement
Surat: Athwalines police arrested a 24-year-old Mumbai man, Navneet Pramod Jha, for rape and offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act (Pocso), after he sabotaged the engagement of the woman he had been in a relationship with.
Jha had allegedly been in a relationship with the woman in question since she was 16 years old and had allegedly raped her at various hotels in Surat.
According to sources in the police, Jha and the girl had met at the wedding of a common relative in 2021 in Mumbai. He then allegedly entered into a relationship with her and raped her at various hotels in Surat. When she asked him to marry her, he made various excuses.
When she realized that Jha did not intend to marry her, she asked her family members to look for other prospects. She then got engaged to a man from her community. As Jha did not want her to marry anyone else, he called the man and his family members and told them about the girl's relationship with him.
After this, the man's family broke off the engagement with her. The girl's family then contacted Athwalines police and filed a complaint for rape.
Inspector H K Solanki said: "We arrested Jha in Noida, where he was working for a private company. He is also studying while doing a job. We are investigating if he is involved in any other crime."
