Nagaland ASSEMBLY Elections 2023

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) are contesting the elections together in Nagaland, which goes to polls on February 27. While the saffron party is fighting the polls on 20 seats, NDPP is contesting 40 seats. Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio will contest from Northern Angami-II assembly seat. He is contesting from the constituency for the ninth time since 1987, the only election in which he failed to emerge victorious. Rio has won two elections uncontested – in 1998 and 2018. There are 183 candidates in the fray for the Nagaland assembly election. A total of 13 political parties are contesting the polls for the 60-member Nagaland assembly. BJP candidate Kazheto Kinimi has won the Akuluto assembly constituency in Zunheboto district without a contest after Congress candidate Khekashe Sumi withdrew his candidature. The ruling NDPP has fielded two women candidates, while the Congress and BJP has fielded one each. Nagaland is yet to get a woman MLA in the 60-member assembly since it got statehood in 1963. The Congress is currently bereft of any MLA in the 60-member assembly. It had last won eight seats in 2013, but the MLAs had later joined the Naga People's Front (NPF). The Naga People's Front (NPF) had emerged as the single largest party in the 2018 elections, however, NDPP and BJP managed to form a coalition government with support of other parties. Chirag Paswan-led Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) has decided to go solo in Nagaland assembly polls. A total of 13,16,064 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the February 27 elections. Of them, 7,982 are service voters. The number of electors in the state stands at 13,17,632, out of which 6,61,489 are male electors, and 6,56,143 are female.
