Veteran Bengali actor Nimu Bhowmik who portrayed crucial character roles in a number of Bengali classics like 'Ganadebata', 'Baghini' and 'Dadar Kirti' among others passed away at his residence in Kolkata on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. Nimu Bhowmik died of cardiac arrest at 4 PM.
He was 84 and is survived by a daughter. The renowned actor was admitted to a city hospital because of stomach ailments in July.
Born on November 14, 1935, in Dinajpur district of undivided Bengal, he a favourite actor for noted directors like Tarun Majumder and appeared in more than 60 films.
His natural acting in different shades in films like 'Ganadebata' (1979), 'Baghini' (1968), 'Dadar Kirti' (1980), 'Guru Dakshina' (1987) are still talked about. His last film, 'Dash Mash Das Diner Galpo', released only last month.
Nimu Bhowmik had joined BJP and unsuccessfully contested Lok Sabha elections from Raiganj constituency in 2014.
