What Is Aerophobia?

Aerophobia is an excessive and irrational fear that can lead to feelings of anxiety or panic when flying, boarding an airplane, being in an airport, or even just thinking about flying, reports Trauma Research UK.
In many of the cases, the effects of aerophobia can be mitigated to an extent by avoidance behaviour when faced with situations involving air travel. However, in some cases, experts advise proper medical treatment.

What Are The Symptoms Of Aerophobia?

Since it is a condition that makes a person get into a state of irrational and excessive fear, anxiety, and rapid increase in the heart rate are the topmost common symptoms. In addition to this, a person suffering from aerophobia, when faced with his fear, is expected to feel nauseous, experience heavy sweating, and trembling.

What Are The Causes Of Aerophobia?

According to another report by Anxiety UK, past trauma from facing turbulence while travelling on a plane can trigger the fear. Further, it is not necessary that the fear would come because of one’s own experience. Even if a person sees a loved one going through something similar or hears them discussing a traumatic event based on the same phobia, he or she can be affected.
Other causes include anxiety disorders like claustrophobia, and post-traumatic stress disorders can lead to aerophobia.

Treatments of Aerophobia

There are several effective techniques to manage fear of flying, also known as aerophobia. Mindfulness and deep breathing can help reduce anxiety, while exposure therapy gradually introduces individuals to flying scenarios in a controlled environment, which can alleviate symptoms. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is another useful approach, as it helps individuals recognize and change negative thoughts and behaviors associated with their fear. In some cases, doctors may prescribe anti-anxiety medications, but these should only be used under medical supervision and for short periods.
