While Stockett was trying to get the book published, Taylor, acquired the film rights and began work on the screenplay. After being rejected by more than 60 literary agents, “The Help” was finally published in 2009 and was on the New York Times bestseller list for a total of 103 weeks.
Set in Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960s, the film chronicles the relationship between three different and extraordinary women who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. Deeply moving, filled with humour, hope and heart, this flick is a timeless and universal story about the ability to create change. The film boasts an illustrious cast, including Academy Award nominee Viola Davis, Allison Janney, Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard, Octavia Spencer, Oscar-winner Sissy Spacek, Jessica Chastain and Academy Award nominee Cicely Tyson.
At the Hollywood Film Festival and Awards held in October, “The Help” won the Hollywood Film Award for The Ensemble Of The Year and Jessica Chastain won the Hollywood Breakthrough Awards for the Actress Of The Year. This film has also been nominated at the People’s Choice Award in three categories: Favourite Book Adaptation, Favorite Movie Drama and Favorite Movie.
