When Jaya Bachchan gave a befitting reply to a fan asking if Amitabh Bachchan had DIVORCED her
Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan have been one of the most talked-about Bollywood couples for over 50 years. The ‘Zanjeer’ co-stars got married on 3 June 1973 and have two children, Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda. Over the years, while Amitabh built a legendary career filled with blockbuster films and awards, his personal life remained just as much in the spotlight – sometimes for all the wrong reasons.
Among the many controversies linked to him, the one that refuses to fade away is his rumoured relationship with Rekha. Fans have long speculated about the chemistry between the two, especially after they starred together in several films. One of the biggest casting coups in Bollywood history was Yash Chopra’s 1981 film 'Silsila'. It brought Amitabh, Jaya, and Rekha together on screen. Many felt it was a case of art imitating life – or perhaps, life imitating art. The film remains iconic not just for its storyline but also for the real-life drama it was believed to reflect.

When a fan asked about divorce – Jaya didn’t hold back
Back in 1998, the 'Guddi' actress took part in a live interview with Rediff. During the chat, a fan from Holland asked her a very direct question, “I don’t know if this chat is still going on, but in case it is: I live in Holland and sometimes we get some desi rumours here. The latest was that Amitabh divorced you. How much of that is true, Jayaji?”

Should Bollywood couples keep their personal lives private?

Jaya didn’t flinch or dodge the question. She gave a reply that was both sharp and full of grace, “I refuse to give any clarifications of my personal life to anyone. But you’re most welcome to send us a congratulatory e-mail,” she replied.
She didn’t stop there. She added, “On this address on the third of June 1998, which is our 25th wedding anniversary. We both will be available in the same house and same address.”
BigB’s sweet gesture for Jaya’s birthday
Coming back to the present, the couple are still going strong. Just a few days ago, it was Jaya’s birthday, and while she doesn’t use social media, Mr.Bachchan made sure to thank fans on her behalf. The Bollywood legend took to X (formerly Twitter) to post a heartfelt message for all the birthday wishes. He wrote, “to all that have wished Jaya on her birthday , my gratitude and love .. it will be impossible to respond to each one hence this comment here.” It was yet another sweet moment in their journey together.

Back on the big screen
Both Amitabh and Jaya remain active in films. Amitabh was last seen in the sci-fi epic 'Kalki 2898 AD', where he played a key role. Jaya, on the other hand, was last seen in Karan Johar’s colourful family drama 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani'.
