From a household name for the serial-struck Malayalis, Asha Sharath has become a popular big screen actor to reckon with. The danseuse, who has been donning characters as diverse as the macho Meenakshi in Buddy, a woman yearning to be a mom in Zachariayude Garbhinikal and the much talked about police avatar in Drishyam, is obviously noted for her selection of roles too.
The next on her platter is the role of a daring media personality in the film Angels, in which Indrajith plays the male lead. In conversation with the actress:
A slew of daring characters Honestly, these are not roles that I consciously pick with an intention to play bold women. All I try is to make sure that out of the ones that I am offered, I pick those I am confident about portraying well. Having said that, the role of Geetha IPS in Drishyam is the one I did with least confidence. I consider myself a very feminine Bharatanatyam dancer. The challenge was playing someone with a rough exterior, but mourns inside about the disappearance of her only son. All I had was the confidence given by Jeethu, who churned out an amazing script, and the support of Sidhique and Mohanlal, who have donned umpteen police roles before.
Similarly, when Raj Prabhavati Menon gave me the brief about characters in Buddy, I was under the impression that I would get the feminine role, unlike the cigarette-smoking Meenakshi whom I played.
Stepping into Tamil and Kannada I just completed the Kannada version of Drishyam, where my character is named Rupa Chandrasekhar IPS and I am paired opposite Prabhu Sir. Working with director P Vasu, who have directed many hit Tamil films, was also a memorable experience. Kannada superstar Ravichandra plays the lead in the film. I had to struggle with the language quite a bit but other than that, I would say the industry is quite friendly. Our set was also great as there were many Malayalis — both among actors and technicians —like cinematographer Madhu Neelakandan and actress Navya Nair. I might do the same character in Tamil as well.
Character in Angels I play a TV journalist called Sajitha Menon, who runs a popular programme of the reality show genre. She is considered an icon in the industry and is renowned for taking strong decisions and admirable stands. At the same time, she is an independent and happy woman in personal life. Indrajith plays the lead. I am quite excited about my role.
Dance and me Dance still means a lot to me and it has not taken a backseat. Recently, I could not attend one of the events to celebrate Drishyam’s success as I had a dance programme in Kannur. I still serve what comes to me first, whether it is a dance show or a good role in a film. Also, acting is something I love to do without affecting the functioning of my dance school or family affairs.
