Saiju Kurup made his Mollywood debut almost a decade ago. And during the journey the actor has received both bouquets and brickbats for his roles. Currently, Saiju is on a career high with an enviable line-up of films, which will see him play diverse roles.
“I am certainly happy to have found my comfort zone. Gone are the days when I was just an actor. Now I am much more involved in a project,” says Saiju.
In his upcoming movie, Aadu – Oru Bheekara Jeeviyanu, Saiju will be seen in a never-seen-before avatar. “I play Arakkal Abdu, a dangerous yet lovable guy, who is the anchor of a tug of war team owned by Shaji Pappan, the character played by Jayasurya. I sport a new look for which I grew a goatee and moustache. Working in the film was fun and I am looking forward to its release,” he says.
Meanwhile, Lukka Chuppi will see Saiju play an entirely different role — a priest named Xavier. “I am making a conscious effort not to repeat the same kind of roles and that is helping me a lot. For instance, in VKP’s Nirnayakam, I play Asif Ali’s uncle and in Chirakodinja Kinavukal, I will be seen as a police commissioner. Though I have only a few scenes in the film, it has significance,” he says.
That’s not all. After a hiatus, Saiju is doing a character with shades of grey in Vijay Babu-starrer Akashavani. “It is a negative character, but I am sure the audience will love his character traits,” he says. Saiju says he doesn’t have any qualms about playing supporting characters if the roles have substance. “I have made many mistakes in the past. Blame it on my age and immaturity. Now, the screen space my character has in a film is not my only priority,” says Saiju.
So what is it that he looks for in a film? “My character should either benefit the film or me. Having said that, I would love to do movies where I get to play good, significant roles. Whatever role I take, I dedicate myself completely to it,” signs off Saiju.
