Rahul Madhavplayed one of the lead roles in Suresh Nair’s Medulla Oblangata but it was his character in 100 Days of Love which got him noticed. Rahul played Nithya Menen’s suave but snobbish fiancé in the film directed by Jenuse Mohamed. Incidentally, Jenuse and Rahul were college mates and also hostel mates at Coimbatore, and that led to the unusual casting. “We were a 15-member gang spread over three rooms in the hostel.
At that point, films were far from my mind,” says Rahul. But the comfort level with Jenuse helped him do full justice to his character, and all credit thus goes to the director, he says.
“Jenuse gave each of us a precise brief, and had clear ideas on even the smallest things. We just had to go along,” he adds. And how were Nithya and Dulquer Salmaan as co-stars? “Dulquer is an extremely chilled out person. As for Nithya, she is one of the most beautiful actress I have ever worked with — with or without make-up. I feel I too looked good when I shared screen space with her. She is a spontaneous actress as well.”
So does he feel negative characters suit him better? “The idea is to be versatile, be it good, bad or funny. I don’t have an inclination towards a certain type of character but I have one towards good scripts and directors. I am open to playing the protagonist or antagonist as long as it’s a good team.”
Coming up next for Rahul in Malayalam is an offbeat film, Kathantharam, where he plays son to Nedumudi Venu. “It’s a film about a father-son relationship — a dad who is very strict and a son who is entirely different. I also have a part in Tamil film Thaniye Oruvan, in which I play a really strong character.”
