Listen up, folks. If there ever was a college in Chennai that deserved to be called The School of Rock, then KCG College of Technology would win that title hands down. At the Clean & Clear Chennai Times Fresh Face 2011 auditions held recently at this campus, both audiences and judges were lost for words at the unveiling of talent that took place here.
From guitarists who’d recreated the glory days of Black Sabbath’s Iron Man to drummers who’d make Metallica’s Lars Ulrich cry tears of joy (courtesy Nia and Ram Kumar), to singers who’d give Kelly Clarkson, a ‘stiffer than a compress’ competition, this was a show that rocked on every note. Singer Ujjayinee Roy, who was the celebrity judge for the day played the role of Jack Black to perfection as she honed the participants then and there on the spot, emphasizing on the need to play something that they loved as opposed to playing something just for performance sake. She even gave nicknames to the top runners, like the Janata Guitarist Rohith.
With her endearing demeanour, she’d made quite a few fans with the crowd who cheered her on and the participants every step of the way. Giving her company was RJ Senthil from Radio Mirchi, who seemed engrossed in the proceedings. While Nia and Ramkumar drummed their way to the top, Rohith, who accompanied many of the other participants, was selected as the first runner-up for his mastery over the strings. While on the percussion scheme of things, Nalin earned brownie points for his feisty mridangam play. Dancing their way to success were Nidhi and Hari Kumar. The culmination of the event witnessed the students getting together to jam in a medley that was nothing short of inspiring.
