‘Gangers’ box office collections day 1: Sundar C’s film mints Rs 58 lakhs

Sundar C’s latest heist comedy, 'Gangers', featuring Vadivelu in a key role, opened modestly yet decently at the box office on its first day.

Decent opening
Released on Thursday, April 24, 2025, the film managed to collect Rs 0.58 crore (Rs 58 lakhs) in India, as per early estimates reported by the Sacnilk website. While the film released with relatively low pre-release buzz and received mixed reviews from audiences and critics alike, the opening collection indicates a fair turnout for a weekday release.

Good occupancy rates
'Gangers', which blends comedy and crime with Sundar C’s signature style, saw an overall Tamil occupancy rate of 13.62% across the day. Among the major cities, Chennai led the numbers with an 18.50% overall occupancy, peaking at 23% during the night shows. Madurai followed with a 16% overall occupancy, while Coimbatore and Bengaluru recorded 12.5% and 7.25% respectively.

The film saw slightly better traction during the evening and night shows, particularly in Chennai and Madurai, suggesting that word-of-mouth might have played a small role in drawing in crowds later in the day. Night shows across Tamil Nadu registered a 17.39% occupancy — the highest among the day’s show slots.
The film received a fairly wide release with 331 shows in Chennai alone and over 250 in Bengaluru. However, sustaining this momentum will depend heavily on the weekend footfalls and whether the film can find favor among family audiences and fans of Sundar C and Vadivelu’s comic timing.

We rated the film with 2.5 star ratings and our review reads, “Thankfully, things improve in the second half and we get to see some comedy that even if it does not make us laugh out loud (like the stretch involving Manobala in the director’s recent Madha Gaja Raja) makes us break into a smile. Vadivelu, who still seems to be finding his form, gives us a glimpse of the comic force that he once was, and Sundar C, too, comes up with moments that come close to the madcap comic energy that we see in his best works.”
