Adam Sandler just can’t help but be ‘himself’!
The American actor and comedian pulled yet another ‘Sandler’ at the 97th
Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre.
During his opening monologue, this year’s Oscars host Conan O’Brien took it upon himself to act as fashion police and told the celebrity-studded crowd that it was of utmost importance “that everyone is properly dressed” for the event. O’Brien then took an aim at Adam Sandler, who looked a bit too slovenly for the ceremony, as he said sarcastically, “You’re dressed well, Adam!” The SNL alum was sitting in an aisle seat sporting basketball shorts and a bright blue hoodie.
O’Brien went on to ask Sandler, “What are you wearing?” causing Sander to throw a full-on man-baby tantrum indicative of many of his comedic characters.
Sandler started yelling as he explained himself, “Nobody even thought about what I was wearing ’til you brought it up!”
O’Brien wasn’t done yet. He went on, “You’re dressed like a guy playing video poker at 2 a.m., Adam!”
To that, Sandler replied, “You know what, Conan?! I like the way I look,” Sandler yelled. “I don’t care about what I wear, what I don’t wear! Goodbye, my snazzy gym shorts and fluffy sweatshirt that offend you so much that you had to mock me in front of my peeeeeeers!”
What was Adam Sandler wearing?
Although the Oscars are known for creating fashion moments, celebrities put their best foot forward on the red carpet in designer clothes. Adam Sandler, one of Hollywood’s funniest men, chose a different route this year. The 58-year-old made a surprise appearance at the 97th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California, where he appeared in his signature style: a hoodie and basketball shorts!
Was that attire intentional?
Many believe the scenes between Sandler and O’Brien at the Oscars were referencing the spat that broke out at the Oval Office in the White House between Trump and Zelenskyy. At the contentious meeting on Friday (February 28), the Ukrainian president was mocked by a reporter for not wearing a suit.
One user on social media noted, “I haven’t seen a single Oscar-nominated movie (as per usual) but I did look at the opening of the 97th Academy Awards just out of curiosity. Conan O’Brien did well and Adam Sandler did a spoof of the Trump-Zelenskyy Oval Office showdown. That’s enough for me. Tuning out now!”
Someone else posed a rhetorical question on X, “Adam Sandler segment was in reference to being underdressed for the occasion. A dig at Trump and Vance for the comments in relation to Zelensky not wearing a suit ?” while another netizen commented, “was the adam sandler bit mocking the zelensky "dont you own a suit" question or am i delulu.”
The aftermath:
O’Brien attempted to apologize to Sandler, but Sandler was so fired up that he got up and prepared to leave. The playful back-and-forth between O’Brien and Sandler ended with Sandler walking out of the ceremony, much to the audience's disappointment, but not before he shared a moment with one particular nominee. He leaned in to Timothee Chalamet and shouted in his signature Sandler voice, "Chalamet!" before pulling the actor into a big hug, drawing laughs from the crowd.
