Alan Strachan's 'Dark Star: A Biography of
Vivien Leigh' has been announced as the winner of the Theatre Book Prize 2020 by the Society for Theatre Research.
The Theatre Book Prize is an annual award which is given to a new book on British or its related history of theatre. It's given by the Society for Theatre Research.
Best known for movies including 'Gone with the Wind' and 'A Streetcar Named Desire', the yesteryear British stage and film actress Vivien Leigh is considered as one of the classic Hollywood actresses of her time.
Strachan's biography gives a glimpse of the actress' personal and professional life through previously unseen sources. In the book, Strachan also writes about Leigh's relationship with actor Laurence Olivier and her bipolar disorder thus portraying Leigh's life for the readers.
The book was chosen from a shortlist of six books. The other books shortlisted for the award were, as reported by The Bookseller, ''The Art of the Artistic Director: Conversations with Leading Practitioners' by Christopher Haydon (Methuen Drama); 'The Birth of Modern Theatre: Rivalry, Riots, and Romance in the Age of Garrick' by Norman S. Poser (Routledge); 'An Illustrated History of British Theatre and Performance' by Robert Leach (Routledge); 'Playwriting: Structure, Character, How and What to Write' by Stephen Jeffreys and Dr Maeve McKeown (Nick Hern Books); and 'Shakespeare Spelt Ruin: The Life of Frederick Balsir Chatterton, Drury Lane's Last Bankrupt' by Robert Whelan (Jacob Tonson).'
