Veteran actor Saira Banu was diagnosed with pneumonia lately and has been having blood clots in her calves. The senior actress has now said that her health condition has improved quite considerably and she is focusing all her energy on recovering from this.
Saira Banu shared that she is recovering well after the health scare and informed that she was getting back to normal. She also mentioned that blood clots have dissolved and she is undergoing physiotherapy.
The 80-year-old actress had been battling health issues since the demise of her husband, the yesteryear actor Dilip Kumar, in 2021. Speaking about her recent hospitalization, she felt an intense emotional bond with her deceased husband.
Pneumonia is a very serious respiratory infection in old age, since the immune system is weak and there is a pre-existing disease also. It can result in very serious complications if it is not treated immediately.
Complications in elderly
Respiratory failure: Inability of lungs to breathe in oxygen.
Sepsis: Severe infection throughout the body.
Bacteremia: Bacteria enter into the bloodstream.
Lung Abscesses: Accumulation of pus inside the lung tissue.
Kidney failure: Organs shut down from infection or oxygen deficiency.
Lung failure: Extreme damage to breathing capacity.
Heart rhythm problems: Heartbeats irregular from systemic stress or low oxygen levels.

Supportive care for pneumonia often includes physiotherapy to improve lung function and overall mobility. Physiotherapy techniques such as deep breathing exercises and controlled coughing help clear mucus from the lungs, enhancing oxygen exchange and reducing infection risk. Postural drainage and percussion may also be used to mobilize secretions and improve airflow. Mobility exercises prevent complications like muscle weakness and blood clots that can arise from prolonged bed rest. By promoting lung expansion, improving circulation, and maintaining physical activity levels, physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the recovery process, helping patients regain strength and respiratory efficiency more quickly. Lifestyle changes include quitting smoking to reduce lung injuries and promote mobility to prevent blood clots that may fill the lungs and enhance lung space.
