NEW DELHI: Pakistan enter the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy as underdogs, based on their middling ODI fortunes since the 2015 World Cup and always fluctuating performances of key players. They barely made the cut for the tournament, ranked eighth ahead of West Indies, and as their skipper Sarfraz Ahmed put it, his team has “nothing to lose”.
The batting is capable, particularly with 22-year-old Babar Azam riding on good form and veteran allrounder Shoaib Malik in strong nick at both international and domestic level. If the recalled former captain Azhar Ali can add strong starts up front, there will be cushion for Pakistan’s outrageously talented but mercurial pace-bowling attack. There will be plenty of eyes on Mohammad Amir as he returns to England where he was exposed as a spot-fixer seven summers ago.
Pakistan have never won the tournament - only twice have they made the semi-finals, losing both times - and in the last edition four years ago in England lost each of their three matches. Their opponents first up are India, who hammered them in the 2013 edition of the tournament and who since then have beaten them in all contests to extend their dominance to 11 wins in ICC tournaments.

Congratulations!
