April 2025 promises to be an exciting month in gaming as familiar faces come back infused with fresh energy, and bold newcomers beckon us into worlds unknown. From the smoky battlefields of World War II to the magical realism of the American South, here are five releases this month that are lighting us up on the radar for good measure.

Commandos: Origins: Tactical roots rediscovered

The Commandos series is making a comeback nearly two decades after its height, but this one's not merely a retro nostalgic affair. Set in WWII, Origins takes players to the earliest days of the formation of the elite squad. At its core, a tactical stealth game supercharged with modern visuals and a tight two-player co-op mode. On PC and all next-gen consoles like PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, this prequel is determined to test your patience, precision, and wits against the enemy all over again.

South of Midnight: A haunting southern spell

Just one day before Commandos arrives in the market, Compulsion Games' South of Midnight has a tonal opposite to create. Players will inhabit Hazel, a magical heroine who makes her way through a mythical version of the American South on a quest for her mother. Although the mechanics adhere to traditional third-person adventure fare, it is the atmosphere—the spectrum of Southern folklore and a hint of uncanny charm—that draws one in. Scheduled for an exclusive release on Xbox Series X|S and PC, it will cater to anyone interested in narrative weight and gloomy stylized visuals.

Warside: Tactical charm with a modern twist

There's a sweet surprise in the mid-month for strategy lovers. Warside has landed on PC with an all-fresh-yet-familiar take on turn-based tactics. Warside will feel like a whole new beast, with its hefty list of commanders and an in-game map editor, even though it echoes the style and mechanics of classics like Advance Wars. With more than 30 unit types and an entire single-player campaign involved, this battlefield really needs creativity and clever positioning to win the day. Console versions are on the map, but first up for this new treat is the PC this April.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves : Fighting for legacy

As it nears the glorious end of April, a classic fighting franchise returns to form again. After being quiet for 26 years, Fatal Fury brings forth a sequel that everyone has been waiting for, City of the Wolves. Coming to PlayStation and Xbox platforms (and PC too), this isn't meant to be a love letter to the old fans that have stayed with the franchise throughout the years-it's a serious contender in today's fighting game arena. It is expected to boast an eye-popping 17-character roster at launch, fluid animation, and a single-player mode called "Episodes of South Town" that places an RPG twist to the formula. Significant development from SNK's iconic brawler.

Days Gone Remastered: Back in the saddle

Days Gone Remastered comes at the end of April as a PS5 and PC makeover of Sony Bend's zombified road trip in an open world. It's a huge upgrade with sharper lighting, better draw distance, enhanced 3D audio, and VRR support. In addition to all the visual upgrades, though, it adds extras like a brutal permadeath mode, Horde Assault challenges, and there is always a speed run option. Fans of the original game may get an upgrade for a fee unless they got it free via PS Plus, but even newcomers will find things to adore about this new Remastered version being released in the last days of April.
