Jordan Westburg shares sleeping guide as he recovers from unusual back injury
Jordan Westburg has not been playing for over a week and the reason has been bizarre. The Baltimore Orioles shortstop shared that he suffered ‘soreness in the back’ and that caused him immense discomfort. He revealed that soreness resulted from sleeping on a soft mattress during his AirBnB stay.
Talking to Larry Brown Sports’ Darryn Albert this Wednesday, he said, “I’m used to sleeping on a rock back home, and my Airbnb has a little bit of a softer mattress.”
Explaining further how important hard mattresses are for the athletes, he continued:
“I gotta sleep on a harder mattress. Just talking with other guys, I think they feel the same. I don’t know if it’s something with being athletes, softer mattresses kind of putting you in bad posture. It’s just what I’ve learned through my experience and getting older, a softer mattress is no good. I might sleep better on it the first two nights, but it’s no good for me.”
A seemingly harmless stay at AirBnB wreaked havoc on the Orioles shortstop’s schedule and he had to be on the bench nursing his sore back while the team competed at Spring Training games in Sarasota, Florida.
Westburg’s peculiar case of soreness in the back indicates how important it is for athletes to have proper sleeping gear in place. A minor glitch can cost game time on the field and pull athletes back from their schedule which affects rhythm as well.
