Mets Wild Card win vs. Brewers in 2024 was no less than a blockbuster entertainer, with Pete Alonso holding the center stage. His role in orchestrating that crazy win came under the scanner recently on account of tipped pitches. Alonso has cleared the air around the allegations, stating preparatory discussions behind his iconic go-ahead, three-run HR that sent the Mets to the NL Division Series.
Pete Alonso defended himself on Devin Williams’ alleged tipped pitches
The Mets Wild Card win vs. the Brewers was not Pete Alonso’s making, but it was a work of tipped pitches if the recent claims are to be believed. As per a video recap by Jomboy, a shocking claim surfaced recently. Alonso, alongside the Mets’ hitting coach, Jeremy Barnes, refuted the allegations entirely, calling his series-winner go-ahead home run a result of a preparatory talk before the at-bats.
Alonso and Barnes recapped the moment just before Alonso pulled off the home run miracle. Barnes told MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, “These things are not as blatant as people think they are.”
Taking deeper into the moment before at-bat, the duo elaborated on the discussion. Barne said he told Alonso Devin Williams’ pitch was a ‘lefty slider.’ Taking the advice, Alonso moved forth with his five-pitch spell.
Pete Alonso’s shocking go-ahead homer became the topic of discussion because of his miraculous rise from a sluggish start. Dicomo reports that the homer made Alonso the first MLB player to stage a classy homer after trailing in nine innings in a decisive post-season game.
Pete Alonso’s contract with Mets details
Pete Alonso’s iconic homer-laced performance in the NL Division series led the Mets to think about re-signing the 1B. The organization recently roped him in for the new season via a 2-year, $54 million contract with a provision for opting out in the next year.
According to MLB.com’s report, the new contract earns him a signing bonus of $10 million, which will amount to $20 million in 2025. If he opts in for the 2026 season, he will be paid $24 million that year.
Pete Alonso, nicknamed ‘The Polar Bear,’ is a four-time All-Star. He was 2019’s NL Rookie of the Year and is a two-time winner of the Home Run Derby.
Alonso was drafted into the MLB by the Mets in 2019. He has made 3607 plate appearances in his MLB career while playing for the Mets. According to a report by MLB.com, he stands second, led only by Aaron Judge, with 226 homers, yielding an average of 43 per 162 games.
