The headlines have been heavy this week, and at the center of it is sports commentator and NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe. On April 22, 2025, Sharpe took to Instagram to finally speak out about the shocking rape allegations that surfaced earlier this month. The claims come in the form of a $50 million civil lawsuit filed by a woman using the pseudonym Jane Doe, who accuses Sharpe of sexual assault. But Sharpe’s not staying silent, not even close.
Sharpe drops a fiery Instagram video accusing the accuser’s lawyer of targeting Black men and editing video evidence
Sharpe’s Instagram statement was emotional, defiant, and very pointed. He spoke directly to his followers, pledging full transparency and claiming this lawsuit isn’t just about him, it’s part of something bigger.
"I’m gonna be open, transparent and defend myself because this isn’t right. This is all being orchestrated by Tony Buzbee, who has targeted Jay-Z,” Sharpe said, tying the case to larger racial and cultural dynamics.
According to Sharpe, Buzbee plans to release a 30-second edited video that allegedly portrays Sharpe in a damaging light. But Sharpe insists that the full video, which he says is 10 minutes long, would tell a completely different story.
“Hey Tony, instead of releasing your edit, put the whole video out. I don’t have it, or I would myself,” Sharpe challenged.
“You know what happened and you’re trying to manipulate the media.”He went on to say the encounter in question happened
“during the day, at her invitation,” and claims it was part of a consensual relationship that’s now being twisted into something else.
Alleged texts and phone call bring graphic details into the case as Sharpe’s legal team fires back
The day before Sharpe’s video, Tony Buzbee’s team released an audio clip in which a man, allegedly Sharpe says,
“I’m going to f–king choke the s–t out of you.” Sharpe hasn’t denied the voice is his, but his attorney Lanny J. Davis fired back, saying the clip was part of a consensual sexual dynamic between the two.
Davis also released a string of explicit text messages allegedly sent by the accuser. One of them reads:
“I want you to put a dog collar around my neck and choke me with it while you’re f–king me.” Davis says the texts prove the relationship included “role-playing” and “fantasy”, framing the accuser's lawsuit as deceptive and manipulative.
Despite the allegations, Shannon Sharpe remains on air with ESPN and appears on ‘First Take’ as usual
Sharpe hasn’t lost any of his regular broadcasting gigs at least not yet. On the same day he released his Instagram video, he appeared live on ESPN’s “First Take,” offering analysis as usual with no public mention of the controversy. That decision by ESPN has sparked conversation online, with fans debating whether the network should take action or wait for more information.
