As the Toronto Maple Leafs head into a pivotal offseason, the organization finds itself dealing with high-stakes negotiations. With prominent stars like Mitch Marner and John Tavares heading into decision-making contract negotiations, another name is emerging to the forefront—Matthew Knies. The 22-year-old forward, who has been called a "unicorn" by NHL analyst Jason Bukala, may be in line for a substantial pay increase, potentially upwards of a $9 million average annual value (AAV) in a long-term extension.
Matthew Knies' unique combination of skills puts him high on Toronto's list
Toronto Maple Leafs drop valuable to Preds, is Matthew Knies worth $9M a season?
Knies has been rapidly becoming one of the Maple Leafs' most prized possessions. Bukala, on Sportsnet, was quick to point out that Toronto needs to act fast to ensure the future of the young sensation. “If I’m Toronto, I’m trying to get (Knies signed) at eight (years),” Bukala stated. “But if you go long-term and eat up UFA years, it might cost at least $1 million more per year. It could literally go to $9 million (average annual value).”
Knies, an impending restricted free agent, has shown an amazing blend of toughness and scoring. This year, in 66 games, he's averaged 25 goals and 45 points with 157 hits. The second-youngest of all NHL players with at least 325 hits and 40 goals since the start of the 2022-23 season, Knies' blend of toughness and scoring is impressive.
“At 22 years old, he is a unicorn,” Bukala said. “For prospects that are coming into the league, he’s a unicorn. For the Toronto Maple Leafs, he is an absolute unicorn. And they’ve been searching for this kind of player, you know, forever.”
A threat to be feared by other clubs?
Considering his talent and size, Knies may draw interest from other teams, especially ones in need of extending a generous offer sheet. The Maple Leafs already have a limited salary cap, and an ambitious push by a rival club may force the front office at Toronto into action.
That being said, Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has made it clear what role Knies is to play in the plans of the club.
“He’s a big part of our team now,” Treliving said. “He’s sort of grown right in front of our eyes. You see a power forward developing.”
Matthew Knies keen on staying in Toronto
During deadline week, when rumours of trading him circulated, Knies acknowledged that the uncertainty was stressful. Nevertheless, his allegiance to the Maple Leafs has not wavered. “A little nerve-wracking,” Knies said. “I wanted to stay here and be part of this group. Fortunately, I’m still here and just excited.”
