Apple is preparing to refresh its lineup with new M4 chips next month, bringing the entire MacBook family into the latest processor generation.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, writing in his Power On newsletter, Apple has begun preparing its retail, marketing, and sales teams for the upcoming launch. The company is also allowing current MacBook Air inventory levels to decrease, a typical sign of an imminent product update.
Both the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models are expected to receive the M4 upgrade simultaneously, following the pattern established with previous releases. The update will complete the transition of Apple's laptop line to M4 processors, coming several months after the MacBook Pro models received their M4 refresh.
While the coming MacBook Air models are to look very much the same as the current ones, the refresh could potentially bring features already seen in M4 MacBook Pro models, one such feature is support for dual external displays while the laptop's lid is open. Current MacBook Air models are limited to a single external display connection.
Following this update, only the Mac Studio and Mac Pro will remain on older-generation Apple Silicon processors. These professional desktop machines are expected to receive their own M4 updates later this year, with the Mac Studio upgrade anticipated between March and June, while the Mac Pro update could arrive anytime from June through fall.
