The state is likely to report fewer than 100 Covid-19 deaths this month, the first time since the early days of the pandemic two years ago. Maharashtra, one of the worst-hit states, had 31 deaths in March 2020, when the virus had just emerged. By the next month, deaths had jumped to 779.

Malaria deaths in the state have registered a near 80% jump this year, rising to 25 from last year's 14. If compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019, when seven deaths were reported and the state was well on the path of malaria elimination, the increase is almost fourfold, reports .
