Nitish Kumar
Nitish Kumar is an Indian politician who is currently serving as the Chief Minister of Bihar. He was born on March 1, 1951, in Bakhtiarpur, Bihar. Nitish Kumar began his political career in the 1970s as a member of the Bihar State Student's Federation and later joined the Janata Party. He was first elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1985 and has been a member of the assembly for several terms.
Nitish Kumar served as the Chief Minister of Bihar for the first time from 2005 to 2014, during which he focused on improving the state's infrastructure, education, and healthcare sectors. He was re-elected as the Chief Minister in 2015 but resigned in 2017 after a falling out with his coalition partner.
For the 2015 elections, Nitish formed a Grand Alliance with Lalu's RJD, the Congress and other regional parties. The alliance won the elections, handing Nitish another term as the Chief Minister of Bihar, but the tie-up lasted just 2 years.
Nitish once again formed a new government with BJP and took oath as CM for the sixth time. In 2020, he contested with BJP as his ally and retained the chief ministerial seat, even though JD(U) won fewer seats than the saffron party.
In 2022, Nitish again severed ties with BJP and returned to the Grand Alliance. He resigned as CM and formed a new government with RJD's Tejashwi Yadav returning as his deputy.
Nitish Kumar has played a key role in uniting opposition parties against the BJP. He met several opposition leaders to try and bring them on one platform. Nitish Kumar had hosted the first meeting of the opposition parties in Patna which laid the foundation for the formation of INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance).
Nitish Kumar has also ensured that the caste survey was completed in Bihar despite several challenges. The ruling alliance will hope to gain from the findings of the survey. Nitish Kumar, who had led an all-party delegation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding caste census in Bihar, has said that the survey findings will be used to frame targeted policies to help every section of society.
