Popular comedian Kettan Singh found himself in controversy last year when filmmaker and host Karan Johar took offense to one of his mimicry acts on the TV show Madness Machayenge. He mimicked Karan and his show Koffee With Churan, which KJo found offensive and criticized the act on social media. This prompted Kettan to apologise to the Bollywood director. In a recent interview with Lallantop, Kettan Singh recalled the incident and shared that he still doesn’t understand what exactly upset Karan Johar.
Kettan said, "It was called Coffee with Chooran. I’d done six or seven episodes of the same on TKSS as that character, and it was very well received." When asked if Karan had seen the episodes, the comedian said, "It is The Kapil Sharma Show everybody watches it."
Kettan narrated the incident in the interview and shared, "Last I was doing Madness Machayenge and during that show, there was an act where I was doing Coffee with Churan. It was unique because not every other person was mimicking Kjo, the way I do. I only mimic those people whom I’ve observed closely. I don't think anyone else has been able to play KJo so well. I was prepared with that and there was not a single line that was offensive in that act.
I did not overdo any harkat of his. Yes, as we have seen Karan at awards and shows he has the tendency to use double meaning jokes and I retained it. Uska promo chal gaya hoga. I was sitting at home on my laptop, and somebody randomly sent me a post on Instagram. It was Karan’s note. He hadn’t specified who he was angry with or even which channel he had seen it on. But I knew he was referring to me. I watched the promo, yet I couldn’t figure out what had upset him."
Kettan went on to share how much he respects Karan Johar and followed his work. He stated that nothing was intentional and revealed his father's personal connection with Dharma Productions. Kettan shared that his father worked as an accountant at the production company during his early days in Mumbai. "Karan is a very big and respected personality and I have followed him a lot and I am a fan of his work. So without understanding I just unconditionally issued an apology. It was not at all intentional aur ho bhi nahi sakta tha. My dad when he was in Mumbai, his first job was at Dharma Productions. He was with the accounts team.In fact, he even held Karan in his arms as a baby. When K3G released, it was the first time he bought us tickets for a film because he was not a fan of movies. That was the only film I have watched with my father in a theatre and because of Dharma nostalgia," he shared.
On being asked if he ever got a chance to meet Karan Johar in person and resolve the issues, Kettan said, "Who am I to meet Karan personally? I had only one medium to convey my thoughts was through journalists. I could not DM him as he is a famous personality."
Kettan has worked in shows like Madness Machayenge, The Kapil Sharma Show, Dr. Madhumati on Duty, Partners: Trouble Hogayi Double.
