#GoldenFrames: Jaishankar, 'The James Bond' of Tamil cinema

Born as Shankar on 12 July 1938 in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli, actor Jaishankar was one of the leading actors during the 1960s and 1970s, who created his niche with his performance in rom-com and action films. Jaishankar made his movie debut in 1965 with 'Iravum Pagalum' and continued to achieve success at the box office with movies like 'Naam Moovar' (1966), 'Gowri Kalyanam' (1966) and 'Kadhalithal Podhuma' (1967). Jaishankar started as an action hero, but eventually, his charisma and unique style left a permanent mark in the history of cinema as a romantic hero as well. Jaishankar's roles as the investigative detective in 'Vallavan Oruvan' and many other CID Shankar movie series made him the James Bond of Tamil cinema. Jaishankar was credited with the onscreen title of 'Makkal Kalaignar', meaning 'People’s Actor' and 'Friday Star'. Jaishankar had two sons and a daughter. The actor died of a heart attack on June 3, 2000, at the age of 61 in Chennai.
