A new live-action Dungeons & Dragons series is in the works at Netflix, suggests a report. The project is based on the Forgotten Realms, one of the most well-known settings in the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) universe.
According to Deadline, this development follows an earlier attempt to bring the franchise to television through a series planned for Paramount+, which had even received a series order. However, that version of the project did not move forward due to strategic changes at Paramount and the sale of eOne, a co-studio on the series, by Hasbro. Now, Hasbro Entertainment is producing the show for Netflix instead.
Drew Crevello, who was previously attached as the showrunner for the Paramount+ version, is leading the new series as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Shawn Levy is also involved in the project as an executive producer, working alongside Dan Levine through their production company 21 Laps, which has a deal with Netflix for TV projects.
Netflix representatives have not commented on the news.
Crevello has previously worked as a co-creator and co-showrunner for Apple TV+’s limited series "WeCrashed". In addition to his television work, he has played a role in developing major films such as "X-Men: First Class" and "Deadpool" during his time as a studio executive.
Dungeons & Dragons, originally created in 1974 by E. Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, is one of the most influential role-playing games of all time. It allows players to create characters from a variety of fantasy races, including elves, dwarves, and orcs, and embark on role-playing adventures in immersive fantasy settings.
This is not the first time Dungeons & Dragons has been adapted for the screen. In the 1980s, an animated TV series based on the game was released. There have also been several live-action movies, beginning in 2000. The most recent adaptation, "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves", was a well-received action-comedy that grossed over $205 million worldwide in 2023.
