Coimbatore corporation school student comes first in NMMS exam in district
Coimbatore: Varsha, a Class VIII student of Masakalipalayam Corporation Middle School, secured first place at the district level in the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) examination. At least 27 students from various corporation schools in the city have cleared the exam. Selected students will receive a scholarship of Rs12,000 per annum until Class XII.
An official with the school education department said Varsha ranked first in the district and 38th at the state level. Three other students from the same school also cleared the exam.
Mythily K, the headmistress of the school, said the students who meet the eligibility criteria must clear both the mental ability test and the scholastic aptitude test under the NMMS scheme.
"To prepare students for the exam, we conducted special classes every Saturday from June to December 2024, along with one-hour evening sessions on weekdays. We also conducted weekly tests to track their progress," she said.
Last year too, it was a student from this school who secured the first place at the district level. "I arranged a flight trip for the students who cleared the exam last time and it helped boost interest among other students in the exam. We are planning a similar trip this year for the four students who cleared the exam," she said.
An official said 229 students from the district have cleared the NMMS examination. Of them, nine students are from Velliangadu Govt Higher Secondary School, the highest number from a single school in the district.
