UDHAGAMANDALAM: Tamil Nadu governor R.N. Ravi expressed concern over the absence of state university vice chancellors at a two-day conference held at Raj Bhavan in Ooty on Friday, alleging government interference and intimidation.
He claimed that university heads were warned against attending and cited incidents involving police pressure.
“Unfortunately, the state universities are not participating in the conference. They have not even informed me in writing that the state govt has warned them not to participate. As of now, one of our vice chancellors is at a police station. Another vice chancellor reached Ooty, and something unprecedented happened—something that never occurred before," governor R.N. Ravi said.
"At midnight, there was a knock on his door, and the secret police from the special branch told him that if he participated in the conference, he would not be able to return home. This conference is meant to improve the quality of education,” he added.
Rebutting the governor's claim, Senior Advocate and Rajya Sabha Member (DMK) P Wilson said on his X handle, “I condemn these false and irresponsible statements made by Thiru R.N. Ravi, Governor of Tamil Nadu, who is proving to be incorrigible. How can a Governor make such baseless allegations against his own govt? These kinds of false statements, which could incite subversive activities against the Govt of Tamil Nadu, are a serious crime. The Governor should not abuse his immunity under Article 361(2)."
"The vice chancellors did not attend this illegal conference called by you because they understand that your intention is to poison our universities with a particular ideology and politicise them. We wish to maintain our universities as centres of academic excellence, imparting scientific education, and will not allow anyone to politicise education or promote pseudoscience and irrational ideologies," P Wilson further added.
