Delhi government launches Ambedkar educational tour programme for students
New Delhi: Delhi govt will launch a ‘Babasaheb Ambedkar educational tour programme' for students to enable them to gain a deeper understanding of his contributions and values, chief minister Rekha Gupta said Monday.
Addressing a programme on Dr Ambedkar's 135th birth anniversary at Shah Auditorium, she said, "The educational tour will take students to key sites associated with Babasaheb's life and work, such as Mahaparinirvan Sthal and Babasaheb Ambedkar International Centre near Parliament House."
Mahaparinirvan Sthal at 26, Alipur Road is a memorial dedicated to Dr Ambedkar. He lived at a bungalow there after resigning as law minister in the Union Council in Nov 1951, until he breathed his last on Dec 6, 1956.
Describing Dr Ambedkar as a national hero who was not confined to any one political party or community, Gupta underlined his role in shaping the Constitution as chairman of its drafting committee, saying his principles bestow rights and a sense of duty upon every citizen.
Delhi govt will also organise special assemblies and educational activities in schools for the next 15 days to introduce students to Dr Ambedkar's ideals, struggles and contributions, CM said. She also paid tributes to him at several events and said her govt, following his principles, is committed to the welfare and empowerment of all communities in Delhi.
Gupta and several other dignitaries, including BJP president J P Nadda, paid floral tributes at the statue of Dr Ambedkar at Prerna Sthal on Parliament premises. Earlier in the day, she inaugurated four public parks located at Ambedkar Colony and laid the foundation stone for a road in Shalimar Bagh constituency.
MCD also held a major event on the occasion. Mayor Mahesh Khichi said Dr Ambedkar was not just a name, but a symbol of social justice, equality and human rights. Praising the contribution of sanitation workers, he said the strong foundation of Delhi's sanitation system rests on their shoulders.
MCD commissioner Ashwani Kumar said Dr Ambedkar was a visionary economist, legal scholar, social reformer, educationist and architect of the Indian Constitution. "He pursued education from some of the world's finest institutions and utilised his knowledge for the upliftment of the nation and society. His legacy of social equality, self-respect and human rights continues to guide our policies and principles," he added.
