Police end robber’s 16-year run
New Delhi: A 16-year manhunt ended with the arrest of a criminal involved in the murder of a businessman and the robbery of Rs 25 lakh in central Delhi's Anand Parbat.
On Feb 28, 2002, the car of businessman Mohan Lal Bansal, a resident of Tri Nagar, was intercepted by four men while he was returning after withdrawing Rs 25 lakh from a bank in Karol Bagh. They shot Bansal and fled with the cash and the vehicle.
Three of the accused, Mukesh, Rakesh and Vijay, were arrested while Sanjeev Verma was killed during a police encounter. Mukesh, linked to 19 criminal cases, absconded in 2009 during the trial. He was arrested in Rohini recently.
Police found that all four accused were already wanted in multiple cases of armed robbery. The investigation revealed that firearms of similar calibre were used in all the crimes. A cache of imported firearms and ammunition was recovered from them.
DCP (crime) Harsh Indora said they recently received information that Mukesh would visit Rohini Jail to meet an accomplice. A trap was laid and he was arrested.
In 1992, a violent clash broke out between two factions, during which Mukesh, along with his accomplices, killed a member of the rival group. Later, he connected with Verma, Rakesh and Vijay, and they formed a gang.
