Underpass & metro station soon: Bakhtawar Chowk in Gurgaon set for revamp
Gurgaon: The long-pending underpass at Bakhtawar Chowk will now be constructed by GMRL, instead of GMDA. GMDA will bear the full cost of the underpass, while GMRL will execute the civil work.
The move, finalised at a recent coordination meeting between the two agencies, is expected to reduce delays, as it eliminates the need for GMDA to float a separate tender for the underpass work. The metro officials had earlier told TOI that they were aiming to start the construction by May. Sector 47 metro station will come up at Bakhtawar Chowk.
Originally conceptualised by GMDA as part of its decongestion plan for the area, it first proposed a flyover at this junction in April 2021. The plan was revised to an underpass in Jan 2023 at a projected cost of Rs 80.4 crore. However, work could not begin due to uncertainties surrounding the alignment of the proposed metro corridor between Millennium City Centre and Cyber City.
Now that the metro alignment is finalised, GMRL will take up the construction of the underpass at this junction with the metro station planned at Bakhtawar Chowk. A single pillar will support both the metro station and the underpass at Bakhtawar Chowk to ensure seamless integration. GMRL has already submitted the design of the metro station at this junction and GMDA will now share its underpass design with GMRL. Officials from both agencies said the designs will be integrated to ensure minimal disruption during and after construction. "We have already shared the station design and now GMDA will share the underpass design. This coordinated approach will streamline construction and avoid repeated excavation or structural conflicts," a GMRL official said.
"This is a practical decision. Since the metro station is to come up at the same location, it was decided that GMRL carry out both works in tandem," a senior GMRL official said.
