HYDERABAD: Telangana govt on Sunday signed letters of intent (LoI) with some leading Japanese eco-town companies for establishment of an eco-town in Hyderabad. This includes major collaboration in recycling, municipal waste management, and environmental restoration.
Eco-towns (in Japan) are being developed to create environmentally friendly and sustainable communities by promoting waste reduction, recycling, and resource-efficient industrial practices.
The LoIs were signed during the ‘Telangana Rising' delegation visit to Kitakyushu city, where its mayor Kazuhisa Takeuchi welcomed chief minister A Revanth Reddy-led team at the Kokura Castle with artistes dressed as Samurai warriors amid Taiko drum beats. The team took a bullet train trip from Osin-Osaka to Kitakyushu, a city known for its achievements in recycling, environment-friendly policies, and urban transformation.
Revanth sought to assure the Japanese firms that the Telangana govt was committed to rapid development, job and wealth creation, and environmental protection. "Sustainability is no longer a luxury nor an optional choice," Revanth said, adding that the Telangana govt and Japanese firms would be working together to establish an eco town in Hyderabad.
The agreement was signed with EX Research Institute, P9 LLC, Nippon Steel Engineering, New Chemical Trading, and Amita Holdings. "With these agreements, it is a special day for Kitakyushu and Hyderabad. I agree it is indeed time for exploring mayor Takeuchi's idea of a sister city agreement between the two cities. We are building a bridge to connect and benefit both cities and make an impact on future generations. We share a vision — clean, circular, green, and sustainable. Your eco town shows what is possible when innovation meets commitment. I want to ensure the same for Hyderabad, and in the net zero target Future City," Revanth said.
Several ideas came up for discussion. While the Japanese side sought a direct flight connecting the two cities, Revanth sought a school teaching Japanese be set up in Hyderabad. "You need young people who can take on various roles. We have people with skills, but one crucial gap is our people have to learn the Japanese language," the CM said.
The two sides also discussed the need for a mechanism to achieve time-bound goals and have regular interactions to review progress and achieve multiple goals during the collaboration.
The Telangana delegation was taken to the river museum to show the restoration project, and how the rejuvenation was executed. They were also given a riverfront walk and a tour of industrial recycling facilities.
Mayor Takeuchi made a presentation on the successful transformation of his city, from being one of the polluted to one of the cleanest, greenest, and environmentally safest cities. "The Kitakyushu govt and companies will work with Hyderabad and the Telangana govt to share their knowledge, processes, tech, and experiences to help Telangana towards achieving environmental engineering, safety, and restoration," he said.
Industries minister Sridhar Babu explained the growth, and transformational plans and the opportunities for Japanese firms to invest in Telangana. "You will find a friendly govt, good infrastructure, skilled workforce, and initiatives aligned with the environment and green innovation," he said.
