Kozhikode: As many as 56 new polling booths will be established in Nilambur assembly constituency for the upcoming assembly byelection. Currently, there are 204 polling booths in the constituency, which will increase to 260.
The decision was taken following Election Commission's directive that polling stations with more than 1,100 voters will be divided.
Malappuram district collector who chaired the meeting with representatives of recognized political parties in the constituency requested the cooperation of political leaders to ensure smooth voting and to eliminate long queues by setting up new polling booths without changing locations.
Field inspections should be completed by Tuesday in the presence of booth-level officers and booth-level agents. In Nilambur alone, 42 new booth-level officers will be appointed.
