Lucknow: Aligarh police on Sunday suspended a sub-inspector of police and a constable in connection with the attack on Samajwadi Party MP Ramji Lal Suman's convoy. A departmental inquiry has also been ordered against the incharge of the local Gabhana police station.
Suman and his associates had a narrow escape on Sunday when his motorcade was attacked with stones and tyres by a group of unruly men in Aligarh. "An FIR was lodged at Gabhana police station in Aligarh and due action will be initiated. No one was injured in the incident. The SP MP and his motorcade were escorted out of Aligarh," said SP, city, Mrigank Shekhar Pathak.
The accused, who claimed allegiance to Karni Sena, shouted slogans against Suman. SP president Akhilesh Yadav expressed serious concern over the attack and condemned the incident.
Due to the attack, SP MP's motorcade sped past the attack site and crashed into a pile-up at the toll plaza. Suman and his supporters, however, escaped unhurt. The entire attack was caught on tape. According to police, Ramji Lal was on his way to Bulandshahr from Agra when the incident occurred near the toll booth.
SP president Akhilesh Yadav condemned the attacked and asked the govt if the attack on Suman was a result of intelligence failure or a deliberate act to look the other way when the attack was planned.
"The attack on Ramji Lal Suman's convoy resulted in an accident that could have been fatal. It was a criminal act. Stones and tyres were kept on the roadside which were used in the attack. This proves that the incident was a part of a well-planned conspiracy. Was this an intelligence failure or a deliberate act to look the other way? The administration must remember that anarchy never spares anyone," Akhilesh said in a statement immediately after the attack.
"The planned attack on Ramji Lal Suman's convoy is an example of ‘street justice' designed to shock and deter Dalit MP from free movement and expression," said senior SP functionary Sudhir Panwar.
The attack is being seen in the light of the threat by Karni Sena over Suman's statement in the Parliament where he referred to Rana Sanga – the ruler of Mewat from 1508 to 1528 – as a "traitor who brought Babur to defeat Ibrahim Lodi". Last month, Karni Sena activists had allegedly vandalized the house of the SP MP in Agra.
