This single tree bears 20 mango varieties
Shivamogga: A retired horticulture officer has gained recognition for growing different varieties of mangoes on a single tree. Usually mango trees bears one kind of fruit in a tree. But the efforts of this officer from Shivamogga bore fruit and a single tree is bearing mangoes of different varieties.
The person who made this special effort is K Srinivas, a resident of Vijayanagar, Shivamogga. He was an assistant horticulture officer, who retired from service seventeen years ago. After retirement, he grew a mango tree in a small area in front of his house. He grafted more than twenty varieties of mangoes on to that tree. His experiment was successful. Srinivas' sixteen years of hard work has now bore fruit. There are more than twenty varieties of mangoes on a single tree.
"Every year, I bring branches of good mango varieties and graft them. The mango tree is bearing a lot of fruits now. I also give these fruits to my neighbours. Farmers can also profit from this grafting method," Srinivas told TOI.
The tree produces mango varieties, including Ratnagiri, Totapuri, Baigan, and Mallika. Every year, he gets at least ten varieties of mangoes. His lone tree in the congested area of the city, is now inspiring others to adopt to grafting method.
