NEW DELHI: Commuters in Delhi and Noida faced severe traffic congestion on Monday morning, particularly along National Highway 24, due to heightened security measures and traffic diversions implemented for the visit of United States Vice President JD Vance.
Visuals from the ground showed long queues of vehicles stuck in peak-hour traffic, with major delays reported along NH-24 and connecting routes.
The Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory outlining special traffic arrangements in place from 6pm to 9pm on Monday due to official events associated with the US vice president’s visit.
In addition, morning restrictions were active between 9 AM and 12 PM, leading to major traffic disruptions.
Routes to AvoidMotorists were urged to steer clear of key areas affected by the restrictions, including IP Marg, ITO Crossing, Vikas Marg, MGM IP Flyover, and BSZ Marg, spanning from W-Point to A-Point.
Other restricted roads include:
- Sardar Patel Marg
- Panchsheel Marg
- Kamal Ataturk Road
- Dhaula Kuan Flyover
- Gurugram Road
- Parade Road
- Thimmaiya Marg
- Air Force Road
No parking or stopping was permitted along these stretches, with warnings that improperly parked vehicles would be towed and fined.
Diversion points & alternate routesDiversion points were set up at critical intersections including:
- Tughlaq Road Roundabout
- Claridges Roundabout
- Yashwant Place
- Shanti Path-Satya Marg
- Satya Marg-Niti Marg
Commuters were advised to take alternate routes such as Vande Mataram Marg (from Dhaula Kuan Flyover to Shankar Road Roundabout), Talkatora Road, and Sheikh Mujib-Ur-Rehman Marg.
For those traveling to and from Indira Gandhi International Airport, Rao Tula Ram Marg was recommended.
Authorities also encouraged the use of public transport and advised people to allow extra time for reaching railway stations, bus terminals (ISBTs), and the airport.
JD Vance is scheduled to depart Delhi on Monday night, continuing his India tour to Jaipur and Agra.
