Man kills elder brother, concocts accidental fall story
Rajkot: Persistent quarrels between two brothers escalated into a gruesome murder in Nalia Mandvi village, near the coastal town of Una in Gir Somnath district, on Monday.
The victim, 32-year-old Hanif Sheikh, was allegedly killed by his younger brother, Javid Sheikh, following a heated altercation. Initially, Javid claimed that Hanif accidentally injured himself with an axe after slipping and falling. In reality, during the scuffle, Javid reportedly snatched the axe from Hanif and struck him fatally on the head and neck.
Despite being rushed to the hospital by Javid and other family members, Hanif succumbed to his injuries on the way. The family buried him in a local cemetery without informing authorities, believing the incident to be closed.
However, after returning from the burial, Javid reportedly confessed to the family that he attacked Hanif in self-defence. Hanif, allegedly addicted to intoxicants, frequently got into violent arguments with Javid. On the morning of the incident, Hanif allegedly tried to assault Javid with the axe, prompting the fatal retaliation.
Upon learning of the confession, the family contacted the Nava Bandar Marine Police, who took Javid into custody for interrogation. Acting on the information, the police exhumed Hanif's body in the presence of the sub-divisional magistrate, Una mamlatdar, taluka development officer, and local community leaders. The body was then sent to Una Government Hospital for postmortem examination.
Javid has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder and destruction of evidence. The complaint was lodged by Ibrahim Sheikh, the youngest of the five brothers. All siblings were engaged in casual labour work.
The murder and subsequent exhumation sent shockwaves through the village, drawing large crowds outside the cemetery.

According to police, a violent dispute broke out between the victim, Bhavesh Vala, and his father, Jorubha. In a fit of rage, Jorubha allegedly attacked Bhavesh with a wooden washing paddle. Initially, Bhavesh's brother, Rajendra, informed police that the injuries were caused by an accidental fall. However, a postmortem revealed multiple blunt force injuries.
Bhavesh was first admitted to the govt hospital in Mahua and later shifted to Sir T Hospital in Bhavnagar due to the severity of his condition. He succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.
