THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A couple in Thanni near Eravipuram, Kollam died by suicide by hanging themselves after allegedly killing their two-year-old child on Wednesday morning. The incident is believed to have been driven by severe financial difficulties and a recent cancer diagnosis.
The deceased have been identified as Ajeesh, 38, his wife Sulu, 36, and their child Aadhi. Ajeesh had returned from abroad earlier this year and was working as an assistant in an advocate's office. Despite constructing a house with a home loan, financial constraints forced him to sell it.
Two weeks ago, Ajeesh was diagnosed with blood cancer, which reportedly left him distressed.
Preliminary post-mortem evidence suggests the couple smothered their child before taking their own lives. However, conclusive findings depend on the final post-mortem report and chemical examination of internal organ samples. A suicide note found at the scene corroborates the family's struggles with financial instability and the cancer diagnosis.
Ajeesh and Sulu were living in a rented sheet-roofed house near the BSNL office in Thanni, along with their parents.
When the family failed to open the door in the morning, the parents broke it open and discovered the child's body on the bed. The couple was found hanging from the roof's iron rods.
Police were immediately alerted, and the bodies were moved to Parippally Medical College Hospital for post-mortem and further investigation.
The Eravipuram police have registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita for unnatural death.
