CBSE introduces key reforms for 2025-26 session: Basic calculators allowed in Class 12 accountancy, digital evaluation to roll out

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has approved the use of basic, non-programmable calculators for Class 12 accountancy students starting from the 2025-26 academic session. This decision, ratified at the board’s 140th governing body meeting, is part of a series of reforms aimed at improving assessment methods, syllabus structure, and evaluation systems.
According to CBSE, only basic calculators with functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentage calculations will be permitted. The board will issue guidelines on acceptable models to ensure uniformity and prevent misuse of advanced or programmable devices. This move aligns CBSE with international assessment standards and supports the National Education Policy (NEP) by promoting higher-order thinking skills and reducing cognitive load.
In another key reform, CBSE has decided to introduce On-Screen Marking (OSM) for digital evaluation of answer sheets. This system, initially to be piloted in select subjects, will scan and upload answer sheets for digital marking, ensuring a faster and more efficient evaluation process. The board aims to implement OSM for both Classes 10 and 12, covering science and mathematics supplementary exams and revaluation cases from the 2024-25 academic session.
Additionally, CBSE has introduced a new re-evaluation process for students dissatisfied with their marks. This system, applicable from the ongoing 2025 board examinations, seeks to improve transparency and provide students with a fairer assessment mechanism.

CBSE has also ratified changes to the curriculum and assessment structure for skill-based (vocational) subjects. The board will collaborate with an external independent agency with expertise in vocational education and industry standards to conduct assessments for these subjects.
Furthermore, from the 2026-27 academic session, Class 10 students will have the option to take both standard and advanced-level science and social science exams on the same day. The advanced-level exams will feature a longer duration and a greater number of questions, providing students with the opportunity to demonstrate a deeper understanding of these subjects.
With these comprehensive reforms, CBSE aims to enhance the overall examination process, reduce logistical challenges, and align its evaluation and assessment methods with global educational practices.
