NEW DELHI: A 19-year-old engineering student from Jammu and Kashmir allegedly died by suicide in a hostel at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (MSU) in Vadodara city, Gujarat on Sunday morning.
The student, identified as Abhishek Sharma, was found hanging from a ceiling fan using a bedsheet in the hostel's common room.
According to police sub-inspector RB Baraiya, Sharma was a second-year student at MSU's Faculty of Technology. CCTV footage showed him walking towards the room and hanging himself using a table and a bedsheet around 6:30 am when no one was present.
"Abhishek Sharma, who hailed from Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir, recently lost his father due to which he had been upset and remained aloof. This could be the reason behind his extreme step," said Fatehgunj police sub-inspector RB Baraiya.
The police sent the body for postmortem to a government hospital. The body was later handed over to Sharma's relative in Vadodara.
