Conflicting political or social stances among actors is a known phenomenon worldwide and India too is no exception in that regard. Over the past many years, several actors of all statures have waged figurative battles with their peers over ideologies, and while most of them have pertained to matters of politics, a few have also been about poignant matters like caste or religion.
In this very vein, a small clash seems to have arisen between actors
Upendra and
Chetan Kumar with the latter lashing out at the 'Kabzaa' actor for his alleged careless remarks recently concerning caste and religion.
A vocal political figure, Upendra has been actively discussing the agenda of his political outfit 'Prajakeeya' on social media wherein he sheds light on the various principles that the party stands by. Having vouched in a recent post that he does not aspire to contest elections at any point, and that 'Prajeekaya' mainly intends on vesting power in the hands of the common people, Upendra shared yet another update through a video very recently. His remarks pertaining to the ideology of the party led him to speak about caste-based politics and how his main goal is to steer completely away from it. However, fellow actor and prominent activist Chetan Kumar did not take kindly to Upendra's stance and deemed it to be a "wishy-washy" gesture on the latter's part.
In an attempt to respond to Upendra, Chetan too took to social media to release a rebuttal, of sorts, and address the true nature of such political stances. Although Upendra wasn't referred to in the video, a few media reports do claim that it was indeed the senior actor who was being spoken about, and as a result, a conflict in their ideologies has sparked a small discussion, so to speak, on the internet.
"Some of our celebrities believe that refraining from discussing caste and discrimination will stop those issues from being perpetuated. Isn't that amusing now? Well, then what about issues like corruption, female foeticide, or even corona which so many scientists and experts are discussing - shouldn't they too go away if we just stop talking about them? The only way to treat an ailment is by addressing it first - similarly, caste identity is the society's ailment and the only way to fix it is by addressing it. In this regard, we can all assess how mature this person is (Upendra) based on his comments. Justice isn't about maintaining status-quo but rather about extending support to those who have been discriminated against and over-looked - even Babasaheb Ambedkar echoed these words and we all know how much this celebrity knows about the great Ambedkar," said Chetan Kumar while taking a dig at Upendra for the latter's recent faux pas.
In the follow-up video, Chetan vociferated the need for introspection among those who deny any direct connections between poverty and casteism. "You need to look beyond your glassed walls," said the 'Aa Dinagalu' actor before holding Upendra and similar celebrities accountable for their vapid promises.
Chetan Kumar, as many would already be aware, has remained an unflinching activist over the years who hasn't backed away from constantly questioning the film fraternity on its shortcomings. While many of his previous assertions have not been pertaining to any particular individual, it would be now interesting to see if actor Upendra chooses to respond to Chetan's remarks in the coming days. More news to follow soon.
