Raghu Samarth is now counting down to the release of his second directorial, Law, which will hit Amazon Prime on July 17. The film, he says, was ready some time ago, but fixing a release schedule took a while, by which time the world was engulfed in the Coronavirus pandemic. “Even though I realise that this is film that we would classify as a multiplex release, meant for a certain section of audiences, obviously, I was looking forward to a theatrical outing when I made it.
But in the current scenario, I cannot hold on to that and insist on a theatre release, because the goal is to bring the film to audiences. Tomorrow, even if theatres reopen, there is no guarantee that people will head out with the same enthusiasm as earlier. So, an OTT platform release made perfect sense,” says Raghu.
Law, which Raghu wrote the script and screenplay for, is the debut vehicle of
Ragini Prajwal, actor Prajwal Devaraj’s wife, who, as the protagonist, will be seen fighting for justice. “Law is only my second film, after Smile Please, because my objective is to present something different, which is not run-of-the-mill. If I also start doing films like everyone else is, I don’t see the point in being in this business. As a member of the audience, I have often wondered how heroines are relegated to being props in the narrative. I did not want that with any of my films and when the script of Law developed, I thought it had something unique about it and, thankfully,
Puneeth Rajkumar and his wife Ashwini agreed and decided to back it through their banner, PRK Productions,” he explains.
The film’s ensemble cast, which include Avinash, Achyuth Kumar, Sudharani and many others, is a major highlight, says Raghu, adding that the music by
Vasuki Vaibhav is also to look out for.
“Working on Law was a new experience for me, in the sense that Raghu was very clear about how he wanted the music to sound. I would say that 50% of the credit goes to him. Also, the fact that the film is more than just a courtroom drama gave me ample scope to experiment with themes and emotions. The standout element, though, is the sole song that has been written by Jayanth Kaikini sir and sung by me and Madhuri. The idea was to have a new-age party song, but with poetic lyrics and Jayanth sir has written just what we wanted,” says Vasuki.
