Review: For, going by the box office, he is truly some kind of a Superman, a metaphor for Tamilian machismo that can be diminished neither by age nor by new heroes. The Boss is always the Boss, be it shooting a bit of gum in his mouth, juggling a rupee coin into his pocket, cracking open human heads or defying gravity in his freestyle kick boxing. Watch him change costumes, change hairstyles, change acting tracks — from comedy to high drama and unbridled action — change dance moves and you’ll understand why Rajni fan worship surpasses Amitabh-Shah Rukh fan worship.
Shankar’s 85-crore film has nothing new to offer in terms of storyline. A regular run-of-the-mill revenge drama, it showcases Rajnikant as a philanthropic NRI who is hellbent on building a hospital and a university for his people. Naturally, he unleashes hell’s fury when the local overlord (Suman) cheats him off his entire wealth and prevents him from building his dream project. Watch the birth of the Lion within Rajni then as he shakes his mane, beats his chest and smirks derisively at all those who try to curb his shakti.

No, we never needed Superman stories in desi cinema, because all our action heroes are supermen, without the scientific hocus-focus. With Manish Malhotra giving Rajni his uber cool look and A R Rahman providing turn-of-the-century scores for the extravagant dance numbers, Sivaji is the perfect entertainer with Rajnikant proving he is truly ageless, at least on screen.
