Singer Kalpana Raghavendar breaks silence on hospitalisation: It was an accidental overdose, not suicide
Renowned playback singer Kalpana Raghavendar, known for her powerful voice in South Indian cinema, recently found herself in the news. She was hospitalised after being found unconscious at her Hyderabad residence, leading to rumors of a suicide attempt. However, Kalpana has since clarified that the incident was not a deliberate attempt to harm herself but rather an accidental overdose of sleeping pills due to chronic insomnia.
On March 5, Kalpana was discovered unconscious by police after her husband, Prasad Prabhakar, alerted the apartment security when she failed to respond to his calls. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was initially put on a ventilator. The incident led to widespread speculation about her personal life and potential family conflicts.
Kalpana and her daughter, Daya Prasad, have vehemently denied rumors of a strained relationship within the family. In a video message from the hospital, Kalpana explained that she has been struggling with insomnia for years due to her hectic schedule. She is currently pursuing her PhD, LLB, and actively working on her music career, which has led to increased stress levels. Her doctor had prescribed sleeping pills to manage her insomnia, and on the day of the incident, she accidentally took an excessive dose.

A video circulating on social media, she said, "I am recording this video to give clarity regarding rumours about me and my husband. At this age, I am pursuing my PhD, LLB and other courses. I am also intensively focusing on my music career. Due to higher stress levels, I have been struggling with sleep issues for the past few years. When I visited the doctor, they said that I had insomnia issues and prescribed tablets. On that particular day, I took extra tablets, which caused a lung infection, and I went into an unconscious state."
She later expressed gratitude to her husband for his timely intervention, which she credits with saving her life. She also thanked the police, media, fans, and colleagues for their support during this challenging time.

She continued, "The reason why I am alive and talking to you is because of my husband, who struggled to save me. He was out of the city and took the help of the police to save me. He co-ordinated with them, the ambulance and the media at the right time to rescue me and take me to the hospital. I survived. Please don't believe any rumours."
She also addressed the rumours about personal issues with family, where she mentions the best thing to have happened to her is getting Prasad Prabhakar as her partner and a responsible daughter like Daya Prasad.

Kalpana Raghavendar is a celebrated singer with over 1,500 songs to her credit in multiple languages, including Malayalam, Telugu, and Tamil. She began her singing career at the age of five and has collaborated with legendary composers like A.R. Rahman and Ilaiyaraaja.
