"I want to be like Shakira," says item girl Mumait Khan, as she finishes recording her maiden pop single, to reinvent herself as a pop diva When Mumait Khan turned up on stage to perform with a mike in hand at a recent beauty pageant in the city, quite a few were pleasantly surprised. The popular item girl then went on to sing a number, that matched with her dance steps.
Mumait is now confident that it will be the first of many more such performances.
Mumait has set her sights on becoming a singer. Her maiden single, Addiction, is all set to release in a couple of weeks and shes over the moon. I cant tell you how excited I am. It is an electronic dance number, written in a mix of Telugu and English slang. All I can say about the song it that it is me. Im sure a lot of people will be astonished watching me and listening to the song, says Mumait, who has collaborated with DJ Sheizwood for the single.
It all began on a whim. One day I went to DJ Sheizwood and told him I want to sing. He did not take me seriously, but upon listening to me sing he was pretty impressed and advised me to take some vocal lessons, she says. The 27-year-old is pretty serious about re-inventing herself as a stage performer. Ive danced in over 120 item songs and acted in a few films. I want to take it to the next level as a performer. I really love singing and it brings out a side of me that acting and item numbers cant. I want to be someone like a Shakira or Beyonce, she says.
