Religious beliefs can make one do a lot of things. While some people remain mindful of the boundaries of practising such beliefs, others end up crossing them consciously or unconsciously. One such event where the aspect of religion has been used to collect money is being criticised on the internet.
In a video going viral on social media, megachurch leader and gossip singer Marvin Sapp can be seen asking his congregation to pitch $40,000 in donations. He can be seen directing the ushers to 'close the doors' and demanding the attendees to shell out a collective sum of $40,000.
"Ushers, close the doors. Close the doors. Close the doors," said Sapp in the resurfaced video. "We all gone [sic] leave together. Y'all ain't going no place but the restaurant," he said, emitting a laugh from the crowd. "This is a small seed... This is easy, saints," he added.
The pastor wanted the congregation of 1,000 churchgoers, with an additional 1,000 present virtually each to give $20, which would sum up to $40,000. Additionally, he asked the people standing behind him to donate $100 each as it "costs to stand up here."
And if the members thought they could escape the donation, then Sapp had another thing coming as he asked them to do it right in front of him. He asked the people to make their way to the altar so he could "see" the donation. "I need to see a thousand people moving, I want to see the folk, y'all start moving," he said. The video did show people moving and donating in the donation baskets where Sapp repeatedly declared, "Giving is worship."
Social media reactions
People all over the internet are condemning Sapp's act of forcing churchgoers to shell out money in the name of god and religion. Many have added how Sapp’s net worth allowed him to provide the sum all on his own and others shared how forcing people to give out money in the name of god and religion is not right. People do come together to donate in times of need, but on most days, they usually need the money themselves.
