The traditional New Year for Maharastrians, called Gudi Padwa, which marks the beginning of the Hindu lunisolar calendar, is being celebrated today. The festival is celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra month of the Hindu calendar, which generally falls in March or April in the Gregorian calendar.
Gudi Padwa is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy in Maharashtra and various parts of Goa. Since Gudi Padwa is the Maharastrians New Year, it signifies new beginnings, prosperity, and the victory of good over evil.
Gudi Padwa has both mythological and historical significance. It is believed that it was on this day that Lord Brahma created the universe and time. Also, historically, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who was the founder of the Maratha Empire, is said to have raised the Gudi to mark his victories, thus making it an important cultural tradition in Maharashtra. For the unversed, Gudi is a sacred flag. And on this day, people do create a Gudi and decorate it in their home on this festival.
This year, Gudi Padwa is being celebrated on March 30, 2025. On this day, people celebrating the festival wake up early in the morning, bathe, and wear new clothes. While women wear traditional Maharashtrian saree, men wear the Indian kurta-pajama and a turban. On this day, people also hoist a Gudi at home, which is made using a bamboo stick which is draped in a bright silk cloth and decorated with neem leaves, mango leaves, and flowers. At the top of the stick, a copper or silver pot is placed, and it symbolises prosperity. This Gudi is then placed outside homes or on windows, and it marks victory and good fortune. And just like any other festival which is incomplete without good food, on this day people prepare special dishes like Puran Poli, Shrikhand, Neem Pachadi, among other traditional Maharastrian recipies. And so, Gudi Padwa is a day of celebrating the New Year with friends, family, and people who are close to you.
