Oscar Piastri has spoken in support of fellow Australian F1 driver Jack Doohan, who was recently axed from the Alpine F1 team over performance issues. He has been replaced by Franco Colapinto for the next five races. While Doohan said in his statement that he will keep his “head down” and continue to work, Piastri said he should keep his head held high for whatever he has achieved so far.
Oscar Piastri wants Jack Doohan to keep his head held high
Oscar Piastri is currently leading the Drivers' Standings with four wins and 131 points this season, whereas Jack Doohan hasn’t secured any points so far.
During his appearance on the Today Show, when Oscar Piastri was asked to comment on Jack Doohan’s exit from Alpine, the McLaren driver said, “If it is the end of the road for Jack, I think he can be very proud,” Piastri said. “It’s not an easy thing coming from Australia, there’s a lot of hard decisions along the way.”
“If he’s had his final race, then hold your head high, you’ve been an F1 driver and no one can take that away from you. I’m sure he’ll have a successful career in whatever happens,” he added.
Doohan drove for Alpine alongside Pierre Gasly in six races but has now lost his seat to Franco Colapinto. He is now the reserve driver for the team, a role he held before getting a chance as the main driver.
Doohan had said in a statement after moving back to being a reserve driver for Alpine, “We have long-term goals as a team to achieve and I will continue to give my maximum efforts in any way I can to help achieve those. For now, I will keep my head down, keep working hard, watch with interest the next five races and keep chasing my own personal goals.”
