Aaron Rodgers sparks surprise buzz with NFC Contender connection

The New York Jets have decided to release Aaron Rodgers, making him a free agent as the NFL free agency period begins. Speculation arises about Rodgers potentially joining the Minnesota Vikings as a one-year stopgap. CBS Sports suggests this could give Minnesota a major upgrade and ease JJ McCarthy into the starting role by 2026.

The New York Jets have made their decision, Aaron Rodgers won’t be part of their future. With March now here, the NFL free agency frenzy is about to begin, and teams are gearing up to make their moves.
While the Jets haven’t officially released Rodgers yet, it’s only a matter of time. Once the new league year kicks off next week, a formal announcement is expected. However, the biggest question remains unanswered: Will Rodgers return for the 2025 season? It seems likely, but until he makes it official, the door remains open for speculation.

Could Aaron Rodgers make a move to Vikings?

In a surprising twist, CBS Sports' Garrett Podell listed the Minnesota Vikings as a potential destination for the four-time MVP.
"If the Vikings really want to play it safe with McCarthy's long-term future, they could sign Rodgers to a one-year deal and wait to give the keys to McCarthy until 2026," Podell noted. "Adding Rodgers could be the perfect one-year stopgap for Minnesota. Having played in Packers head coach Matt LaFleur's offense, who is a descendent of the Shanahan-McVay tree, Rodgers would already walk in the building with a high familiarity with (Kevin O'Connell's) playbook.” (Via: si)
Podell further highlighted how Rodgers' efficiency could be a major upgrade over Sam Darnold, who threw 12 interceptions last season, tied for the fourth-most in the league. In contrast, Rodgers holds the best touchdown-to-interception ratio in NFL history (503 touchdowns to 116 interceptions) and won back-to-back MVPs under LaFleur’s scheme in 2020 and 2021.

Would signing Aaron Rodgers a smart move for Vikings?

The idea of Rodgers in a Vikings uniform is certainly unexpected. Minnesota had Sam Darnold in 2024, and he delivered 35 touchdown passes. Plus, the team invested in JJ McCarthy, selecting him 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. While Darnold is set to hit free agency, McCarthy remains in the mix, making a potential Rodgers signing all the more intriguing.
Could Minnesota actually pull the trigger on this shocking move? With free agency around the corner, the NFL world won’t have to wait long for answers.
