According to sources, the Las Vegas Raiders are expected to release cornerback Jack Jones. It was an unexpected move that took place on Sunday, April 6.
The NFL media reported that the move will likely be official on Monday, April 7. Sources said that earlier on Sunday, the Raiders were trying to trade for Jones before his release.
Is the salary cap the reason behind Cornerback Jack Jones' exit from the Las Vegas Raiders?
News has been reported that the move will bring a lot of financial savings for the Raiders.
The team is going to save approximately. $3.4 million in salary cap space after moving on from Jones.
The team was expecting to trade for Jones, which can still take place. There have been claims given by the Raiders that Jack Jones was off waivers in November 2023 when the New England Patriots and Bill Belichick left him on the midway just before the NFL season.
This is not the first time. Earlier, the Patriots drafted Jack Jones in the year 2022. Jones has to strive hard to bring him back to the ground. His journey, like other players', has a twist in the tale.
During the annual league meeting, the General Manager, John Spytek, said, “The nickel is a critical spot in Pete [Carroll]'s and [defensive coordinator Patrick Graham's] defense.”
“We stress the importance of that position in our defense. They're asked to do a lot, and they can be hard to find,” he further added.
Jack Jones had a good start in the year 2023, but 2024 did not favored him. He just had three Pick 6s in 24 games with the Raiders and started with 16 games in the year 2024.
Overall, he has played 24 games with the Las Vegas Raiders. Looking back to 2024, he totaled 69 tackles, 16 passes defended, and 3 interceptions. He owns a passer rating of 108.9 on 88 targets.
Jones also faced a blow with Coach Antonio Pierce, and with Pierce’s exit in January, which was another shaking point in his life.
Pierce said, “Some players make business decisions,” as he calls Jones after a loss to Carolina. Though Jones tried to defend himself, in the later part, he did not choose to start the week's game against Cleveland.
